Education: 70 children in Destaing community to send to school

JACMEL - The Pierre-Paul Christian Initiative identifies 70 children in need of support so they can go to school over the coming school year that will start in September.

During a prospecting visit at Rue Destaing, a little community located next to Jacmel town, JosuĂ© Pierre-Paul identified 70 children who will need support to go to school next year. Their parents are jobless and most of them didn't reach grade 8. Victims of the January 2010 earthquake, their situation got worse. Some of them took part in the Cash for work project that enabled them to get 200 gourdes (about $ 5 US) a day.  One of the PCI volunteers who came in July noticed that that salary was not even enough for a breakfast. Many of these children couldn't go to school as their parents couldn't find money to pay and couldn't find place for their children in public schools.

Pierre-Paul targeted children in primary school. Those children say they would like to go to school, learn a profession and find jobs in the future... in a society where more than 80% of the whole population are jobless. But it is better for them to learn and have a good education. To go to school, they will need money to pay school fees, books, copybooks, pens, pencils, crayons. Several parents said that they would also need money to give to children to go school [so they can buy food over the breaktime]. Because sending children to school with no money to buy things to eat is like a trap for them. As it is said in Creole culture: Empy sacks can't stand.

Without your support, the PCI will not be able to do so. If you would like to participate in this project, helping us send those 70 children to school without major difficulties, please contact us:
